The mother liquor still contains dissolved CBD. This solution can be reprocessed! One caveat is that the mother liquor will accumulate THC over time. This sets a practical limitation to the number of crystallization.
Without chromatography equipment, we can still make the CBD crystals, we can jump over the chromatography isolation step, just do the crystallization to get high purity CBD crystals. Turns out this is cost-effective method, widely used in making CBD crystals. Here we will introduce how to do it!
Make sure the jacketed vessel’s vent/condenser is connected to an appropriate chiller for pentane vapors. The boiling point of pentane is 36C. Even at lower temperatures, pentane will release many vapors. BE CAREFUL AND TAKE ALL PROPER PRECAUTIONS! Make sure the vessel condenser is cooled to -20C. Use a three to one ratio of CBD oil to pentane and set the machine to stir this mixture(some oils require slightly more or less pentane) in the jacketed vessel. Turn on stirring and turn on the heating bath and set to 45C. Wait until the solution reaches 45C and all the oil has dissolved.
CBD is one of the most popular cannabinoids that come from cannabis. CBD continues to grow in popularity and has seen applications ranging from the food industry to the medical field. When it is extracted and isolated without any other cannabinoids, we call it isolate. CBD crystals are one form of CBD isolate available to users. CBD isolate is the purest form of cannabidiol, composed of at least 99% CBD. Through a unique extraction and purification process, manufacturers remove all other plant extracts from hemp-sourced CBD oil. What remains? An incredibly pure, white powder that is tasteless and odorless. Basically, these crystals are pure cannabidiol without other cannabinoids or other compounds. This means that the CBD crystals don’t have any traces of terpenes, flavonoids, THC, or the other compounds that are usually present in your typical full-spectrum CBD products.
Quality CBD crystals begin with Quality CBD distillate. Always remember this. The starting material should be extracted CBD oil that has been decarbed, winterized and distilled. The CBD oil may need to go through several distillation passes before it’s considered pure enough to crystalize as a CBD isolate. It should be a very light yellow or completely clear in color once enough of the impurities are removed. CBD distillate should be clear. Cloudiness means there are contaminants like water, waxes and fats. If the oil is cloudy try winterizing again until the oil becomes clear.
Precipitation: Set the bath to 5C. Slow the stirring. As the solution cools it will become more viscous. Adjust the stirrer to keep the RPM above 120. CBD crystals will spontaneously form or crash out of the pentane solution. Keep reducing the temperature to at least -10 C. What temperatures you use and how they change over time can change the growth of the crystals.
Once precipitation stops, flush or physically remove The CBD crystals from the reactor. Vacuum filter the crystal/liquid slurry to remove the mother liquor from the CBD crystals. Rinse the crystals with ice-cold pentane to rinse impurities from the crystal surfaces. More rinses with pentane can improve poor color, but losses in total yield will occur. Keeping the CBD and materials cold during this step will help give you a better yield.
A glass nutsche filter vessel with stirring will be used to dissolve and crystallize the CBD. A heating/cooling bath is connected to the vessel jacket and will be used to control the temperature of the vessel. You’ll also need pentane, it has a low boiling point, so it’s easy for it to overheat and cause issues during the crystallization process. . Be careful! This can be dangerous stuff.
Most cannabis processors are not going to have access to industrial chromatography equipment to produce crystals, chromatography system is very expensive, you need very professional people to do the method development and run the system.
Technically, CBD crystals are classified as pure CBD isolate. Cannabidiol crystals are available in the solid, diamond-like form. In order to make CBD crystals, you will need special equipments. Chromatography, which is a method of isolating and purifying cannabinoids, is often used in the cannabis industry to separate THC and CBD from already extracted cannabis. Crystallisation is a key step in CBD isolation. After chromatography is used to refine CBD to very high levels, removing THC, terpenes and other impurities, the CBD is further purified and collected in solid form by crystallising it from the extract. This is typically done with strong solvents which help remove the THC which stays liquid.
Pentane and other volatiles can be very dangerous due to their low flash points. Don’t try this without consulting your safety officer and evaluating all of the possible safety concerns.

Crystalline Isolate is an extremely pure form of cannabinoid that is extracted using CO2 or butane/propane. Available in both THC-A and CBD, crystalline can contain up to 99.97% THC or CBD depending on the application.
The only caveat to this is that you will not have the accompanying terpenes, and therefore will not experience the “entourage effect” that cannabis flower provides. However if you are intent on re-creating such an experience, you can reintroduce cannabis terpenes into your crystalline, or simply soak it within “terp sauce”.
So How Do They Make This Stuff?
The first step is to take your cannabis extract and mix it with acetic acid and hexane, the combination of chemicals will act as a solvent to separate the dissolved plant matter from the THC/CBD. After the mixture has had time to settle, it is put through a filter and then the remaining fluid is placed within a roto-vape where the acetic acid and hexane are evaporated off. The remaining mixture will be primarily Delta-9 THC-A or CBD-A.
In order to further purify the extract, chromatography is used in order to separate impure elements of the solution from the desired cannabinoids. Chromatography (sounds complicated but isn’t really) is a chemical process where different materials and mediums are used to separate different components within a solution based on its affinity to the different filter mediums and density (kind’ve like your standard water filter). In the instance of THC-A, chemists add Sephadex-LH20, dichloromethane and chloroform in order to further clarify the cannabis extract into majority cannabinoids and solvent devoid of any plant material.
The remaining solvent from the mixture needs to be evaporated, so it is placed within the roto-vape again, where it crystallizes. Afterwards, in order to make the crystals consumable, they go through a series of chemical washes, filtrations and roto-vaping.
Post chromatography, the crystals are dissolved in methanol and then filtered and then roto-vaped to remove the methanol. Afterward, pentane is used to remove the smallest bits of non-THC or non-CBD material and then roto-vaped for the last time. The results, white crystals testing at 99.97% cannabinoid.
Ideally, in order to maximize on time and resources, A-grade flower with a high THC-A or CBD count (depending on what you’re isolating) will be blasted with CO2 or butane/propane in order to extract the greatest yield of cannabinoids from the plant material. The crude oil that is extracted isn’t completely “clean” and will typically have a fair amount of waxes and lipids emulsified within the oil. Once the crude oil is winterized and the major waxes and lipids are filtered we would be left with cannabis extract that could be placed within a vape cartridge or dabbed on a rig. However, this oil will range from 65-90% THC or CBD and still exist within a viscous/fluid state. In order to solidify the cannabinoids out of the remaining non-cannabinoid material, we must take the cannabis extract add different solvents in different stages and run it through a number of different filtrations.
While it is certainly possible to draw out extracts that are extremely high in THC and CBD with CO2 and hydrocarbon extraction and distillation, but THC-A and CBD crystalline opens up different potentials for storage and consumption to the market. For instance, storage is much more convenient when using crystalline isolate, less messy when dabbing, and easier to incorporate into foods and topicals (presuming you have decarboxylated your crystals). Did I mention that it is also very pretty to look at?
For some this high-potency offering may seem excessive, but for many it is rather attractive. Medical marijuana patients are actively seeking the benefits of higher doses while veteran smoker may be looking for a new level of high. No matter the use, crystalline isolate is an exciting development within the chemistry of cannabis and the development of novel methods of consumption devoid of any harmful solvents and carcinogens.

Then, a refining process that strips away all other phytocannabinoids, including THC, and any plant matter. What remains is the CBD chemical compound in its purest form.

For starters, true CBD isolates consist of nothing but pure CBD, so there’s no need to worry about THC possibly entering your system and showing up on a potential drug test. Although it’s highly unlikely, trace amounts of THC found in hemp-derived CBD oil can theoretically cause a positive drug screening result.
While consuming CBD isolate might sound like a great approach, keep in mind that there is also a key disadvantage of isolating CBD from other cannabis compounds. Research has shown that the combination of cannabinoids and terpenes generates an entourage effect, a synergistic interaction that boosts the individual effects of each compound involved. Stripping away all the other cannabinoids prevents you from experiencing the potential benefits of the entourage effect.
