IBD tank receives water from various drains and CBD tank. when Silica concentration increases in boiler blow down it is directed to IBD Tank instead of CBD tank to prevent reentry of Silica into cycle.

IBD – Intermediate Blow Down.

CBD is a continuous process found in sub critical boilers. A part of feed water is removed from boiler drum to reduce the concentration of salts that get precipitated due to addition of chemical. To recover heat in continuous blowdown water a flash tank is used known as CBD Tank. Where Drum pressure is less than that of drum heat. So CBD water vapourises leaving behind the salts. The vapourises steam is added to deaerator. The salt residue is sent to IBD tank. From IBD tank it is sent to drain.

Can anyone explain me in detail the function of IBD and CBD in a boiler? I have joined a thermal power plant recently as executive and undergoing my training. If possible also give me link to some manual where I can read more about this topic.

As Rick says IBD and CBD refer to blowing down the boiler water to a drain either continuously or intermittently. A continuous blowdown is to remove dissolved solids and prevent the water from concentrating to high. It blows down from a location which avoids blowing down new feedwater coming in to the drum. Intermittent blowdown blows down solids which have precipitated from the water and settled in a low flowing area such as the bottom drum or bottom headers. Blowing down from these areas disrupts circulation and cannot be carried out continuously and on some boilers no firing is allowed.

CBD is accomplished with a metering valve or a valve in which you can change the size of the orifice. CBD removes the impurities in the water that accumulate near the surface in the steam drum due to their reduced solubility in the water. By removing these impurities near the surface, it prevent them from bonding together to form larger masses that become heavier than the water and drop to the bottom in the form of scale deposits.
