Rather than focusing on our current level of knowledge obtained from CBD research, this panel will discuss the difficulties in conducting satisfactory cannabinoid research and how best to address this problem. The federal government unfortunately continues to enforce restrictive policies and regulations on research into cannabis products even though changes in state policy have led to the increasing prevalence of cannabis use and availability in a majority of US states. These barriers markedly affect the ability to conduct comprehensive basic, clinical, and public health research on cannabinoids. In the absence of an appropriately funded and supported cannabis research agenda, patients may be unaware of viable treatment options, providers may be unable to prescribe effective treatments, policy makers may be hindered from developing evidence-based policies, and health care organizations and insurance providers lack a basis on which to revise their care and coverage policies. This matter gains further urgency as Canada legalizes recreational cannabis use to the north, effectively annihilating the DEAs insistence that international treatise are what force us to label cannabis as a controlled substance. Panelists will consider practical solutions to facilitate quality clinical studies that can conclusively demonstrate CBDs medicinal efficacy, thus necessitating its reclassification from Schedule I. As with THC- and THC/CBD-based products, CBD can be consumed in a variety of ways. And with each product – whether an oil- or water-based tincture, lotion, edible, or vape – comes specific formulations. Those taking CBD medicinally have to find the specific dosage and route of administration that works best for them in treating certain conditions. Differences in dosage, as well as how the product is ingested, greatly affect how it is broken down in the body and thus its ability to alleviate certain symptoms. This panel includes specialists who took on the challenge of creating different CBD formulations in a now-vast market and will share their learning and recommendations from this process. The 55-and-older crowd is now the fastest-growing demographic of cannabis users in the country. And why not? CBD can address many of the ailments that this age group is prone to. The neuroprotective qualities CBD imbues on the brain also make it an ideal preventative therapy for this age group, who are most at risk for developing serious neurodegenerative conditions. Its analgesic qualities, thought to be modulated through interactions with the CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptors, make it an excellent alternative to opioids for pain reduction. Recent findings suggest arthritic patients display more CB2 receptors in their joints. When CBD was introduced orally, it interacted with those receptors, promoting analgesia in the affected area. CBD also has anxiolytic and anti-depressant effects, which combat anxiety and depression many seniors suffer from as a result of the life changes accompanying growing older. A general review of why more and more seniors are choosing CBD will ensue, followed by specific conditions which CBD can help treat and potentially cure. Can CBD interact or interfere with any medications I’m currently on? Should I discuss CBD use with my primary care doctor? What is the best way for seniors to take CBD? What dosages are recommended for those starting off? The post The Silver Lining in the Golden Oil: CBD for Seniors appeared first on CBD Health and Wellness.
